The Long Pond Lodge Update - June 2008

Sundog or reverse rainbow on Lake Champlain

I was glad to see the month of May come to end and hoped that the wind would stop blowing so hard in June.  We had more days in May with high winds than I can remember in a very long time.  We enjoyed much better weather in June and never actually got blown off Lake Champlain to the point where had to go to some one of the interior Adirondack lakes to fish.  We had just enough wind that the direction and velocity didn’t stop us from getting to those smallmouth “hot” spots where we always find smallmouth bass at this time of the year.  We did have a few days when the blowing of the wind caused big waves which churned up the water and caused a very erratic bite.  One day we would have a banner day with good numbers of quality fish, as our pictures reflect, the next day it was hunt and peck with a great deal of casting looking for some fish.  We had a few days when we would spend the morning fishing for smallmouth and then decided to fish for largemouth in the protected bays on the New York side of the lake in the afternoon.  The largemouth bass and pike were more cooperative and were found in much shallower water close to weeds that were just starting to grow.  There were some real brutes in the 5 pound and over class caught during the month on Texas rigged Stik-O’s.  The pike bite was really hot and were caught on flukes, X-Raps and other jerkbaits.  The green tube jig is still catching more smallmouth than any other lure or color. It proves itself year after year and is still # 1.   Read more.

Catch of the Month
14 year old Chris Zampini from Branchburg, NJ had a fishing trip that we all dream about and hope will happen.  He caught some real quality largemouth while fishing in Long Pond during the rain and after supper one evening with his dad. (Check out the pictures)  Then he went out on Lake Champlain and caught some real large smallmouth including one that weighed 4 ½ pounds. He did all this with the help of his dad, John, who brought him to the lodge.   We highlighted Bob Johnston our 92 year old fishing guru last month and this month 14 year old Chris Zampini is highlighted.  It just shows fishing is for all ages both young and older.
